Tobacco Control

Smoking is a major problem facing the health care system in Qatar, and it is not only harmful to smokers themselves, but also to non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke. Smoking is common in Qatar, where many people smoke cigarettes or traditional hookahs.

Health Implications:

Smoking has serious implications for human health. According to the World Health Organization, smoking kills half of all smokers around the world, and regular exposure to tobacco smoke is directly related to both smoker and passive smokers' disease, including cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory diseases.

Health Goals of Tobacco Control

  • Establish a system for monitoring tobacco consumption (at the national level that includes the primary health care system) and conduct regular smoking surveys in accordance with the recommendations of the Global Tobacco Monitoring System
  • Implementing a framework for implementing the tobacco law in line with the policies and decisions of the WHO Convention on Tobacco Control.
  • Establishing quality and available services to quit smoking according to the highest standards, including a telephone line and a national website to help those who wish to do so, and provide all methods of treating nicotine, and providing support through primary health care services
  • Establish a practical and comprehensive tax model on tobacco products, including customs duties and taxes on tobacco production and sale
